Indiana Diabetes Testing with NC-stat®
NC Stat test being conducted on patient
What is NC-stat®?
An NC-stat is one of the Indiana Diabetes Testing options available at Endocrinology Specialists. This test measures nerve response (a patient's ability or inability to feel pain). Individuals with diabetes often lose the sensation of touch, which can lead to sores and cuts becoming infected to the point where serious health problems can result, including the risk of amputation. This test determines the amount and location of nerve damage.
How can I prepare for this test?
It is important that you are free of lotions, oils, or products like Vaseline. These products prevent the electrodes from sticking to the skin and may delay your test or cause false results.
How is the test done?
This test is conducted by a medical assistant. She will place electrodes on the part of your body being tested. The medical assistant will use a handheld computer to send a small electrical shock and the nerve will respond by twitching. The computer records the nerve responses. The data is then sent to Harvard University Neurology Department for analysis. We receive the results in about one week.
How are the results used?
The results will allow the doctor to determine if there is nerve damage and how severe it is. The doctor will then construct a comprehensive treatment plan. After the procedure the doctor may call with the results or simply wait until your next appointment. If there is nerve damage, he may prescribe medication or refer you to a physical therapist or neurologist for further diabetic assistance in Indiana.
How long will the test take?
The test takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
What else do I need to know?
This test involves electrically stimulating nerves. The shocks will feel like a bee sting, but will not cause any damage to you.
