Indiana Lung Function Testing - Spirometry
What is spirometry?
Spirometry is a simple, quick breathing exercise used to help diagnose asthma and other forms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Spirometry is performed by our Pulmonary Specialists, our Internal Medicine Specialists, and at our asthma and allergies centers in Indiana. The spirometry test measures lung function and lung capacity in order to diagnose or find warning signs of these conditions.
How can I prepare for the test?
No special preparation is necessary.
How is the test done?
Spirometry is a breathing exercise in which a small computer measures the amount and/or speed of air that can be exhaled. During the test, the patient will be asked to breathe in and forcefully blow air out in order to measure lung function.
How long will it take?
The spirometry test takes approximately 10 minutes.
How are the results used?
Spirometries give the doctor an indication of airway function so that a proper diagnosis can be made and a treatment plan can be developed.
What else do I need to know?
Spirometry may cause shortness of breath, but symptoms should resolve after the test is completed.
