Allergy Skin Testing

Medical Specialists Allergy TestingWhat is allergy skin testing?

For our patients, allergy skin testing is a simple, quick, and non-invasive method of determining allergies. Allergies can range from mild to severe and it is important to be tested so that you can be aware of potential health hazards in your everyday life.

How can I prepare for the test?

If you take antihistamine medication, it may bias the results of the skin test. Therefore, you must stop taking antihistamine medication (i.e. Claritin or Benadryl) 4 days prior to the procedure.

How is the test done?

In an allergy skin test, a trained nurse applies a liquid form of the allergen in question (i.e. dust, cat hair, pollen, etc) to the surface of the skin for a short period of time (usually 20 minutes). When the test is over, the liquid allergens are washed off the skin and a hydrocortisone cream is applied.

How long will it take?

Allergy skin testing in Indiana can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the type and extent of the testing.

How are the results used?

This test can show which allergens may be causing problems. Results are interpreted by the physician and a treatment plan is discussed with the patient.

What else do I need to know?

Allergy testing may cause minor itching during the procedure, but this resolves quickly after the allergens are washed off the skin. The allergy nurse may also apply hydrocortisone cream to soothe the skin. For more information return to our allergy and asthma overview page.
